Brown Bear (Grizzly)
It is not unusual for first time mothers to fail at raising their first cub. Sometimes new mothers can't put on adequate weight in the fall and simply run out of milk for the cub in the Spring. Once they stop lactating, they automatically come into estrus. If the cub is still alive when the breeding season starts, it may be abandoned when the male shows up to mate.
